Commonwealth games 2010 Delhi - Security Concerns

India is hosting a mega sporting event of this magnitude for the first time. It chose its capital Delhi to host Commonwealth 2010 games.  Indian economy has been growing at an average rate of more than 6 percent each year since last 10 years.  India's growth has been noticed for its significant achievements in education, information technology, medicine and textile.  India has been upgrading its infrastructure including roads, airports, telecommunication lines and others.  The new Hyderabad international airport was named the best of its category in the world (http://www.hyderabad.aero) by Airports Council International (ACI) and i am fully confident that the new Delhi's international airport will receive its honors soon as well.

Overall, India is the best country to host Commonwealth games this year.  However, there are some security concerns.  Terrorist groups like Al-qaeda have been threatening to disrupt sporting events in India.  Whether they are able or not, these threats have participating countries thinking about its athletes' safety.  Well, the question is, Can these groups execute attacks in Delhi now?

I would say, no.  It is not in the interest of these terrorist groups or those sponsors to disrupt these games.  If they do, these groups and sponsoring countries will face military action from India and significant anger from other countries.  India can use these attacks as an opportunity to keep pressure on militants across the border by frequently attacking them on the foreign land.  Neighboring countries are well aware of India's military power and i sincenrely doubt if they want to push India to its threshold.

India blames its neighbor for not taking actions on 42 known terrorist camps along its border.  Even recently, it warned Pakistan about the increased terrorist activity along its boarder.  It is holding secretary-level talks with Pakistan, but i think, India announced these talks to specifically share intelligence information with Pakistan and warn of consequences if in fact there is an attack on games.

Delhi was chosen as the venue for its location.  It is in the main land far enough from oceans and also it is the headquarter for intelligence, paramilitary and military forces.  Delhi union territory itself has a Chief Minister and a governing administration.  So, the administration can provide the best possible security to athletes and visitors.  In any case, if in fact, there is an attack then i think militants across the boarder will definitely face military action from India.  This will not be a welcoming situation for Pakistan.

India is aiming to host Olympics soon, and so, these games are very prestigious and have to go smoothly.  So, I think countries can feel safe enough in sending its athletes, and follow administration's security guidelines.
